In response to the Valentine's Day shooting at Marjorie Douglas Stoneman High School in Florida, Indivisible Skagit's March meeting became a forum on Gun Violence in Our Communities and was recorded for Speak Up! Speak Out!. With this tragic event, the national gun violence dialogue has moved. Brave students have become the voice, turning grief into action.
Jade Carter from Anacortes High School, Jennifer Ramirez from Burlington-Edison High School, Ava Ross from Mount Vernon High School, and Llyra Roe from Sedro Woolley High School helped organize their school's national walk-out on the one-month anniversary of the Florida shooting and spoke eloquently about it. In addition, the chairpersons of two local gun violence prevention groups, Margy Lavelle for Safe and Sane Skagit, and Julie Wenzel of Skagit Moms Demand Action, spoke, as did Krista Salinas for her emergency management business, Strategic Emergency Education. Cathy Munsen from the Alliance for Gun Responsibility presented a slide show on Washington State GVP legislation and the Alliance's ability to push it. This will air in a second segment, April 11.
A Skagit #marchforourlives is planned for March 24, organized by Llyra Roe.
