We couldn't pass up an opportunity to interview a Palestine man from Gaza who actually got out of Gaza and visited the U.S. Dr. Mustafa El-Hawi spoke with jim justice and Ginny Wolff from Pennsylvania by Skype. (Pardon the sound quality early in the interview - It gets better.) Dr. El-Hawi talks about the critical challenges of living in Gaza, from lack of basic necessities such as food, safe water, lack of medical care and education to the chronic threat of violence from drones flying overhead 24/7.
With a PhD in Environmental Management, Dr. El-Hawi teaches at Al Aqfa University, and actively looks for solutions to inadequate waste water treatment and lack of safe drinking water. But his volunteer work with Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) gives him the most satisfaction as he teaches and fosters both Palestinians and some Israelis in skills of non violence and how to deal with chronic trauma. AVPUSA is what brought him to the U.S. on this trip. His message to Americans it that the Palestinians locked in Gaza badly need our help for basic necessities, and for the U.S. to recognize and end the human rights abuses of those trapped in the "open air prison" of Gaza.
