In the first half of this show, Ginny talks with Emily Johnston and Ken Ward, two of the activists who shut off valves in pipelines carrying tar sands from Alberta, B.C. to the U.S. in a direct action on Oct. 11, 2016. The activists discuss their motives, the action itself, the charges they face, and their defense. The trial for Ken Ward, who shut off a valve in Skagit County, is scheduled to start Jan. 30.
Part 2 is a conversation with Alex Ramel, the Field Director for the Extreme Oil Campaign with Stand.earth, formerly Forest Ethics, about fossil fuel transport projects in our local and regional area. Alex recaps successes in 2016, projects that remains in the permitting process, and challenges ahead with the incoming fossil fuel-friendly Trump administration. He makes a plea for continued citizen engagement supporting a carbon pricing law. Finally he suggests a big-picture approach toward fighting these huge infrastructure projects when faced with an atmosphere in D.C. hostile towards addressing climate change.
